A Personal Encounter with a Sea Turtle
|
|
Finding Hope
A vacationer shares his personal story of meeting a sea turtle in trouble and how he came to spend his Hawaiian vacation rescuing sea turtles on Oahu:
I visit my mother on Oahu a couple of times a year and I snorkel every day that conditions allow. I love swimming alongside sea turtles when I encounter them. I wasn't prepared, however, to help the turtle I later named Hope, when I first saw her at Chun's reef on Oahu's North Shore.

First Aid for Man-of-War & Sea Urchin Stings
|
|
What everyone needs to know!
If you've ever been stung by one of these marine creatures, you know it HURTS!!First, here's how to avoid getting stung:
Portuguese Man-of-War: When you see the little blue jellyfish on the beach, don't get in the water.
Sea Urchin: Use caution when swimming in tidepools and rocky areas. Look before you put your feet down on the rocks. These creatures hide in the cracks.
If you get stung by Jelly Fish: Don't panic; the stings are not lethal, just painful. Get out of the ocean, and try to remove the tentacles or spines. (Use a glove or stick or sand for jellyfish tentacles, to avoid further injury.)

Why Redheads Burn Easier

All about Pigments and Skin Cancer
Redheads sunburn easily, putting them at high risk of skin cancer. But new research suggests that the pigment that colors their skin may set them up for cancer-spurring sun damage even if they don't burn.
Not only do people with red hair have less protective pigment than people with darker hair, but the pigment they did have appeared to be more likely to react to produce harmful agents associated with cancer.
